Germany has formally approved large-scale underground CO₂ storage, marking its biggest policy shift yet on industrial decarbonization.

After clearing the Bundestag, the Bundesrat has now given final consent to legislation enabling CO₂ storage at industrial scale, a move seen as essential for sectors where emissions remain unavoidable, including cement, lime, and aluminum.

The new law establishes a national framework for CO₂ storage primarily beneath the seabed, excluding protected areas and near-shore zones. It also contains an opt-in clause allowing individual federal states to authorize onshore storage, a provision closely watched by industrial hubs seeking local solutions.
