株式会社商船三井、Climeworks社とCO2除去を行う初の海運会社となる

Climeworks社は、同社の高品質な直接空気回収（Direct Air Capture）技術を活用する初の日本企業パートナーである株式会社商船三井のために、13,400トンのCO2を除去する。
商船三井は、今回の協定について、2050年ネットゼロ目標達成のための同社戦略に貢献すると述べ、排出削減が困難な他産業に強力な手本を示した。商船三井は、Climeworks社にとって海運業界初のパートナーである。
両社は、CDRクレジットのオフテイク契約に加え、将来的なClimeworks社直接空気回収プラントへの出資の可能性に関する覚書（MOU）も交わした。Climeworks社は、2030年代にCO2除去能力100万トン達成への道を加速させるために世界中でプロジェクトを開発中であり、商船三井もこれに参加することを視野に入れている。
商船三井は、国際海事機関（International Maritime Organization）の気候戦略に準拠し、2050年までの排出量ネットゼロを達成するために複数のイニシアティブを推進している。クリーン・エネルギーの採用、省エネ技術の導入及び業務の効率化に加え、商船三井は、2030年までに220万トンのCO2除去に貢献することを目標としている。Climeworks社との最先端直接空気回収技術に焦点を当てたこの協定は、その目標に向けた重要なステップである。

Climeworks will remove 13,400 tons of CO2 for Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, the first Japanese partner that taps into its high-quality Direct Air Capture technology.
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines said the agreement contributed to its strategy to achieve a 2050 net-zero target and sets a strong example for other hard-to-abate industries. MOL is Climeworks’ first partner from the shipping industry.
In addition to the carbon removal offtake agreement, the two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding for potential investment in Climeworks’ future Direct Air Capture plants. Climeworks has a global pipeline of projects under development to accelerate its path to million-ton capacity in the 2030s, which MOL envisions participating in.
In line with the International Maritime Organization’s climate strategy, MOL is promoting several initiatives to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. On top of adopting clean energy, implementing energy-saving technologies, and increasing the efficiency of its operations, MOL aims to contribute 2.2 million tons of carbon removal by 2030. The agreement with Climeworks, focused on its cutting-edge Direct Air Capture technology, marks a significant step toward that goal.
