BHP社の声明によると、この調査は、アジア全域の排出削減が困難な産業でCCUSを利用するための技術的・商業的な手段を検討するものであるという。BHP社の声明は加えて「本調査は、回収したCO2を再利用ないし貯留できる大規模プロジェクトを開発する可能性に重点を置く」と述べている。調査は、インフラの共有と規模の経済性を活用し、回収したCO2を産業プロセスに利用する可能性、あるいは、回収したCO2をパイプラインないし船舶でアジアまたは豪州北部の貯留サイトに輸送することを模索する。BHP社によると、調査に参加する各社は少なくとも1つのハブに含まれる予定であり、調査は各ハブについて、費用やスケジュールの見積もり、潜在的な商業化の道筋を含む概念的開発戦略を提示することになるという。CCUSの域内・域外評価を含む規制的評価や越境輸送等、CCUSハブを実現するために必要となる非技術的要因にも重点を置かれる。この調査は、2026年末までに終了する見込みであり、調査結果は、より広範な産業による学習を促進し、CCUSを可能にする政策の策定や規制的枠組の整備を支援するために公開される。
Major Steel Cos to Conduct Studies on Carbon Capture

A group of Indian and foreign headquartered steel majors is undertaking pre-feasibility studies to assess the development of Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) hubs across Asia. ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India, JSW Steel, Hyundai Steel Company and other value chain players, BHP, Chevron, Mitsui & Co., are participating in this exercise.
A BHP statement said this study will examine the technical and commercial pathways to utilising CCUS in hard-to-abate industries across Asia. “The study will focus on the potential to develop large-scale projects which can repurpose, or store, captured carbon dioxide (CO2),” the BHP statement added. By leveraging shared infrastructure and economies of scale, the study seeks potential applications for captured CO2 in industrial processes, or transport captured CO2 via pipeline or shipping to storage sites in Asia or Northern Australia. The plan is for each participant in the study to be included in at least one hub, and the study will deliver conceptual development strategies for each hub including cost and schedule estimates, and potential commercialisation pathways, BHP said. Non-technical enablers required for making CCUS hubs a reality like regulatory assessments, including intra and inter-regional assessments of CCUS, and cross border transport will also be in focus. This study is expected to conclude by 2026-end, with findings to be shared publicly to promote broader industry learning and support the development of enabling policy and regulatory frameworks.
