この新しい契約の下、Planetary社は2026年から2030年の間、大気中からCO2を除去し海洋に何千年もの間貯留する過程を通じて、OAE炭素除去契約としてはこれまでで最大規模となる11万5,000トンの炭素除去を実現することとなる。
2019年に設立された、カナダを拠点とするPlanetary社は、海水復元を通じて沿岸海域のCO2吸収能力を回復させることで、大気中からCO2を除去すると同時に海洋酸性化問題に対処するOAE手法を開発している。同社の手法は、海水に純粋な制酸剤を投入してアルカリ度を高め、水中のCO2及び炭酸を中性塩の形で中和するものであり、中性塩は1万年以上、持続的に海洋に貯留される。海水からCO2が除去されることで、大気・海洋間のガス交換過程に余地が生まれ、大気中から更なるCO2が海洋へと吸収されることとなる。
Planetary Signs $31 Million Ocean Carbon Removal Deal with Buyers Including Google, Stripe, H&M

Carbon removal buyer coalition Frontier announced that it has facilitated carbon removal offtake agreements of more than $31 million with Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE) technology company Planetary, from buyers including Stripe, Google, Shopify, and McKinsey Sustainability, Autodesk, H&M Group, and Workday.
Under the new agreements, Planetary will deliver 115,000 tons of carbon removals between 2026 and 2030, generated through a process that removes carbon from the atmosphere and stores it in the ocean for thousands of years, marking the largest-ever OAE carbon removal agreement to date.
Founded in 2019, Canada-based Planetary is developing OAE methods to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while also addressing ocean acidification by restoring coastal waters’ ability to absorb CO2 through seawater restoration. The company’s process adds a pure antacid to seawater, adding alkalinity, and neutralizing CO2 and carbonic acid in the water in the form of neutral salts, which are durable stored in the ocean for over 10,000 years. With the CO2 removed from the water, space is opened up for the air-sea-gas exchange process for more CO2 from the air to be absorbed into the ocean.
