英国の洋上CO2回収技術会社であるSeabound社は、初の商業規模船上CCS装置を完成させ、パイロット試験段階から実用化できる装置への飛躍的な前進を遂げた。
同システムは、英国ドンカスター（Doncaster）にある同社研究開発施設で組み立てられ、妥当性確認が行われた後、セメント輸送船団で運用されている船舶への搭載が承認された。
一連の陸上トライアルの後、回収モジュールはHeidelberg Materials社によって傭船されたセメント運搬船「UBC Cork」に搭載される予定である。このプロジェクトは、Seabound社が、実証プロジェクトから実際の海洋環境における運用展開へと移行していることを示している。
プロトタイプから船上搭載へ
装置開発の重要な節目と並行して、Seabound社は欧州宇宙機関（European Space Agency）から商業規模への拡大を支援する新たな援助を確保し、加えて、ネットポジティブな回収経路に向けてグリーン石灰の製造に焦点を当てた、Thyssenkrupp Polysius社との技術提携を発表した。
2021年に設立されたSeabound社は、現在までに850万ポンド（約1,140万ドル）以上の資金を調達しており、洋上CO2回収において複数の初期段階における世界初の実績を打ち立てている。
海運業が気候関連規則の強化に直面し、液体燃料の短期的な代替策も限られる中で、Seabound社は、性能、費用、船上への統合性が実際の操業環境下でも維持されることを条件に、モジュール式でレトロフィット対応可能な回収システムが船舶所有者に短期的な規制遵守の道を提供できると見込んでいる。
Seabound Deploys First Full-Scale Onboard CCS System

UK maritime carbon capture firm Seabound has completed its first commercial-scale onboard CCS units, marking a step-change from pilot testing to deployment-ready hardware.
The systems were assembled and validated at the company’s R&D facility in Doncaster, before being cleared for installation on a working vessel in the cement shipping fleet.
After a series of land-based trials, the capture modules are set to be fitted to the UBC Cork, a cement carrier chartered by Heidelberg Materials. The project signals Seabound’s shift from demonstration projects toward operational deployments in live maritime environments.
From prototypes to shipboard deployment
Alongside the hardware milestone, Seabound has secured fresh backing from the European Space Agency to support commercial scale-up, and announced a technical collaboration with thyssenkrupp Polysius focused on producing green lime for net-positive capture pathways.
Founded in 2021, the company has raised more than £8.5 million (~$11.4 million) to date and claims multiple early-stage firsts in maritime carbon capture.
With shipping facing tightening climate rules and limited near-term alternatives to liquid fuels, Seabound is betting that modular, retrofit-ready capture systems can offer shipowners a near-term compliance pathway, provided performance, cost, and onboard integration hold up under real-world operating conditions.
