Spirit Energy has secured a significant regulatory advancement for its Morecambe Net Zero (MNZ) Peak Cluster CCS initiative, moving forward with plans to convert exhausted gas reservoirs in the East Irish Sea into a major CO2 sequestration site.
The company confirmed that the UK’s North Sea Transition Authority has allowed the project to enter the Assess Phase of its carbon storage license, bringing it closer to obtaining permits for permanent CO2 storage in the depleted North and South Morecambe fields after gas extraction concludes later this decade.
This achievement comes after three years of technical assessments, which included a detailed 3D seismic survey and an advanced subsurface imaging campaign to assess the fields’ storage capacity. The offshore work, carried out by Shearwater Geoservices, spanned roughly 500 square kilometers in the East Irish Sea.
