日本は、国内最大規模の液化CO2輸送拠点となり得る計画を推進しており、水島における共用CCSインフラの構築に向けて主要産業グループ6社を選定した。
住友商事株式会社、旭化成株式会社、ENEOS株式会社、JFEスチール株式会社、三菱ガス化学株式会社、三菱ケミカル株式会社は、岡山県倉敷市水島コンビナートを支えるCO2の分離回収・液化・一時貯蔵・出荷設備の調査業務に関し、独立行政法人エネルギー・金属鉱物資源機構（JOGMEC）から委託を受けた。
同クラスターからは、年間約343万トンの液化CO2が出荷されると見込まれており、これは現在日本で開発されているCCSクラスターと比較して最大規模の出荷量である。
水島は、鉄鋼、化学、自動車、エネルギーの主要事業が集積する国内最大級の産業地帯であり、電化や再生可能エネルギーの導入だけでは十分な脱炭素化が難しい、排出削減が困難な排出源が複数立地している。
Japan lines up CO2 shipping hub at Mizushima

Japan is advancing plans for what could become the country’s largest liquefied CO2 shipping hub, with six major industrial groups selected to design shared CCS infrastructure at Mizushima.
Sumitomo Corporation, Asahi Kasei, ENEOS, JFE Steel, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical and Mitsubishi Chemical have been commissioned by JOGMEC to study CO2 separation, capture, liquefaction, temporary storage and shipping facilities serving the Mizushima industrial complex in Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture.
The cluster is expected to ship around 3.43m tonnes of liquefied CO2 annually, the largest volume among CCS clusters currently under development in Japan.
Mizushima is one of the country’s biggest industrial areas, hosting major steel, chemicals, automotive and energy operations, including several hard-to-abate emitters where electrification and renewable energy alone are unlikely to deliver sufficient decarbonisation.
