Woodside社は、豪州ブルーム（Broome）の北約425キロメートル沖に位置するブラウズ堆積盆地（Browse basin）からガスを抽出する計画の一環として、CCSプロジェクトの開発申請を豪州連邦政府に提出している。
上記提案の下、同エネルギー大手は2つの浮体式生産設備を用いてガスを抽出し、約900キロメートル離れた豪州カラサ（Karatha）近郊のバーラップ半島（Burrup Peninsula）における同社のノース・ウェスト・シェルフ（North West Shelf）プロジェクトまでパイプライン輸送する予定である。
同プロジェクトに伴う排出量を削減するため、Woodside社はCO2を海底下4キロメートルに位置するジュラ紀の岩層に再圧入し、そこに封じ込めるシステムの構築を目指している。
しかしこのプロセスは、建設工事による海洋生物への影響だけでなく、プロジェクトの稼働期間である数十年にわたり、貯留されたCO2を監視するために必要となる定期的な地震波探査爆破に関しても懸念する環境保護団体の反発を招いている。
豪州最大規模の未開発ガス資源を開発するというWoodside社の提案は2018年に提出されていたが、CO2回収計画は2023年に提示され、改正された連邦環境法の下、先月再提出された。このCO2回収案に対する意見募集は金曜日（24日）に締め切られる。
しかし、豪州海洋保全協会（Australian Marine Conservation Society）化石燃料活動担当者（fossil fuels campaigner）であるChelsea Deng氏は、先週のPilot Energy社の経営破綻及びそれに続く西オーストラリア州沿岸ドンガラ（Dongara）近郊における同社クリフ・ヘッド（Cliff Head）CCSの廃止に伴う難題は、この技術にとっての警鐘であると述べた。

Woodside has an application before the federal government to develop a CCS project, which forms part of plans to extract gas from the Browse basin, about 425 kilometres north of Broome.
Under the proposal, the energy giant would use two floating production vessels to extract gas and pipe it about 900 kilometres to the company’s North West Shelf project on the Burrup Peninsula, near Karratha.
To mitigate emissions from the project, Woodside wants to build a system that would re-inject carbon dioxide back into a Jurassic-era rock formation four kilometres below the seabed, where it would remain trapped.
However, that process has drawn the ire of environment groups, concerned not only about the impact on marine life from construction, but also the regular seismic blasting required to monitor the stored carbon dioxide over the decades the project is operational.
Woodside’s proposal to develop the nation’s biggest untapped gas resource was submitted back in 2018, but its carbon capture plans were introduced in 2023 before being resubmitted last month under updated federal environment legislation. Comment on the carbon capture proposal closes on Friday.
However, Australian Marine Conservation Society fossil fuels campaigner Chelsea Deng said the collapse of Pilot Energy last week and subsequent decommissioning headache at the company’s Cliff Head CCS, further down the WA coast near Dongara, was a red flag for the technology.
