Wirral councilors reject land access for £5-B carbon capture pipeline

The Peak Cluster project, backed by the government at a cost of £5 B, would carry carbon dioxide (CO2) from lime and cement plants in Derbyshire and Staffordshire through an underground pipeline crossing the Wirral Peninsula before reaching offshore storage beneath the Irish Sea. Developers say the pipeline would prevent 3 MMtpy of CO2 from entering the atmosphere once operational.
Wirral Council’s Policy and Resource committee had been asked to approve land access so Peak Cluster could carry out surveys ahead of construction. A committee report warned that if the request were refused, Peak Cluster could still seek a court warrant to authorize access, per the BBC.
Councilors across parties opposed the request. Reform UK’s Kathy Hodson said she would abstain from voting since her mind was already made up against the project, telling the meeting she was prepared to “lay in the mud naked” to block the land being dug up.
