French utility and environmental services firm Veolia is rolling out a pilot carbon capture facility in Le Mans, northwestern France, that could reshape the circular economy business model for municipalities.
In partnership with Le Mans Métropole, one of 14 urban communities in France, the company will install equipment at a waste-to-energy plant outside Le Mans to capture up to 10 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per day with an estimated 90% capture rate.
Once liquefied, the captured CO2 will be re-used locally for applications such as greenhouse crop fertilization, dry ice production, fire extinguisher charging, and conversion into mineral materials or sustainable fuels.
The project marks the first phase of a dedicated investment program by Veolia of roughly $13.9 million (€12 million) through 2028, in line with its strategic initiative GreenUp to decarbonize and regenerate resources.
