米国カリフォルニア州、操業可能となったCO2貯留プロジェクト第１号を開始

California Resources Corporation社（CRC社）が、Carbon TerraVault I（CTV I）で初めてのCO2圧入実施を発表し、米国カリフォルニア州で初めて操業可能となったCCSプロジェクトの開始を示した。
上記プロジェクトは、同州カーン郡（Kern County）にあるエルク・ヒルズ油田（Elk Hills Field）に位置しており、CRC社の極低温ガス処理プラントからCO2を回収し、地下1マイル以上の深さにある枯渇した油田・ガス田に貯留する。この画期的な節目により、カリフォルニア州はCCSプロジェクトを概念段階から操業段階に移行させた世界的にも数少ない地域の1つに位置づけられることとなる、と同社は述べた。
CRC社のCEOであるFrancisco Leon氏は、このプロジェクトについて、大規模なカーボンマネジメントがカリフォルニア州の気候戦略において実用的な役割を果たすと同時に、エネルギー・レジリエンスを支え得ることを実証していると述べた。
CTV Iは、26R及びA1-A2として知られる2つの枯渇した貯留層で構成されている。本格稼働すれば、26R貯留層単独で年間最大146万トンのCO2貯留が見込まれており、累計貯留能力は、3,800万トンに達する可能性がある。

California Resources Corporation (CRC) has announced the first CO2 injection at Carbon TerraVault I (CTV I), marking the launch of California’s first operational CCS project.
Located at the Elk Hills Field in Kern County, the project captures CO2 from CRC’s cryogenic gas plant and stores it in depleted oil and gas reservoirs more than one mile underground. The company said the milestone positions California among a small number of regions globally to move CCS projects from concept into operation.
CRC CEO Francisco Leon said the project demonstrates that large-scale carbon management can play a practical role in California’s climate strategy while supporting energy resilience.
CTV I consists of two depleted reservoirs known as 26R and A1-A2. At full capacity, the 26R reservoir alone is expected to store up to 1.46 million metric tons of CO2 annually, with total storage potential reaching 38 million tons.
