Background and Objectives |
The year 2024 is a significant turning point for the further development and commercial deployment of Japan’s CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) technology. In May 2024, the CCS Business Act was passed by the Diet and is scheduled to come into force, establishing the legal foundation for promoting CCS projects in Japan. Notably, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is leading in this endeavour, considering specific support measures for future CCS business with an eye to the final investment decision (FID) in 2026 and commercial deployment in 2030. These policy developments, led by the Ministry, will be a significant factor in accelerating the development and dissemination of CCS technology in Japan and will be an essential step towards achieving carbon neutrality.
From an international perspective, CCS technology is gaining increasing attention. In addition to advanced nations such as the United States and Europe, new projects are progressing in regions like Asia, the Middle East, and Oceania. According to the Institute’s database, as of July 2024, the number of commercial-scale CCS projects has exceeded 600, with a capture capacity surpassing 400 million tons annually. The integration of CCS with technologies such as blue hydrogen, blue ammonia, and Direct Air Capture (DAC) is expected to advance future technological capabilities significantly and make substantial environmental contributions. Against this backdrop of domestic and international developments, the 2024 Japan CCS Forum will focus on technological advancements in areas such as Direct Air Capture (DAC) and storage, as well as CCS policies and project trends in Europe. The forum aims to provide a platform for knowledge sharing and business exchange, contributing to the further dissemination of CCS technology and realising a carbon-neutral society. We look forward to the participation of many attendees again this year. |
